The largest telematics project in Finland helped traffic flow smoother on VT4

Highway 4 (VT4) is one of Finland’s main thoroughfares, with up to 50,000 vehicles travelling on it every day. During 2017–2021, the stretch of VT4 between Oulu and Kemi was improved in several phases to enhance traffic flow and safety, as well as the reliability of business transport. As part of the improvement project, we carried out the largest telematics project in Finland on VT4 from Kempele to Kello, near Oulu, in 2017–2020. In the project, we built a wide range of electronic road traffic infrastructure to enable smoother and safer traffic.

Our contract included the implementation of the entire telematics system for the region. In total, we installed up to 136 variable signs, including variable speed limit signs and various warning and information signs. We also installed other telematics equipment such as cameras, road weather stations and traffic counters along the VT4.

The new measurements and displays will give motorists on the road more information about traffic and weather conditions. The displays can be used to provide real-time information on, for example, congestion and disruptions, which helps traffic flow more smoothly.
