National Road 7 Ahvenkoski bridge, Pyhtää

During the years 2013-2014, Destia implemented the National Road 7 Ahvenkoski bridge in Pyhtää. It is a Langer beam bridge (cable) and it is the only Langer arch bridge in Finland. The work was a part of the E18 project (Koskenkylä-Kotka), which improved safety and flow of traffic on national road 7 reducing accidents and congestion significantly. The customer of the project was the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.

The bridge S115 in the middle gap is a so-called Langer beam bridge. The deck structure is suspended by a single arch partly made of steel and connected by suspension rods. The shape of the arch is the curve of a circle. The suspension rods have been placed in two rows and slightly titled towards each other at the arch level so that their imagined extensions meet at a single point. The bridge carries the traffics of both of the motorway roads as a single, monolith structure.

The project in numbers:

  • 1 new bridge
  • The effective width of the deck is 2 x 12.0 m
  • The total width with the intermediate lane is 28.8 m
  • The deck structure of the main gap extends over the shorter edge spans; span measurements are about 22.5 + 90 + 22.5 m
